Turning One-Off Scripts Into Reusable Helpers

Computer screen displaying code and text

A script that saved you an afternoon deserves a second pass before you forget how it works. Extract the hard-coded paths into arguments. Replace magic numbers with named constants.

Add a usage example in a comment or --help text. Future you will not remember the exact flags. Keep dependencies minimal; a helper that needs a full framework is rarely reused.

Test the happy path and one failure case. Even a tiny script benefits from a sample input file checked into the same folder.

Finally, decide where it lives: personal toolkit, team repo, or public gist. Location determines how carefully you polish it.
